behind the scenes, wedding tips, latest sessions, & love stories

One year ago today, on Saturday August 4, Brooke & Jason were married at the Toronto Ontario Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!

Brooke is from Ontario, Jason is from Texas. Over 2371 kilometres away from each other and yet their paths still crossed. They met while attending school at Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho.

Being “married in the temple” is what you might commonly hear from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Temple wedding ceremonies are not like regular wedding day ceremonies. The sacred ceremony is held inside the temple, typically no more than 20 people. LDS members believe that when they are married, or “sealed“, in the temple, they are married/sealed together for time and all eternity, not just “till death do you part”.

Brooke & Jason promised forever to each other. It’s an incredibly beautiful thing.

They decided to get married in Ontario before the next semester started for them, charging into the school year as a newly married couple. It was an intimate gathering of the ones they loved. Despite growing up in two different countries, their closest family members were present to celebrate them. This was the first temple wedding we photographed that was purely just the closest family awaiting them to exit the temple. No bridesmaids and groomsmen either. Just the two of them were enough. The pure joy that lit up their faces says it all.

“We don’t just get to grow old together, we get to grow up together – and that’s the real adventure”.

My favourite quote, the one that truly embodies our relationship, for my favourite day of the year. Happy 4th year anniversary to us! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you know our story, you know we didn’t know each other for very long before we decided to get married. Sometimes I can’t believe we’ve only known each other for a little over 4 years. But at the same time it feels like we’ve known each other forever. Because we only knew each other for a short period of time, there were a lot of things I never could have imagined would blossom into our lives since being together.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that I, the one who wanted to be a teacher since the 2nd grade, would be running a business with my husband where we are constantly looking for ways to innovate and improve ourselves, our business, and the experience we provide out clients. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that I, the girl who grew up in Toronto and is a city girl through and through, would be living in Guelph while my husband attends the local university – a city we both absolutely adore and a university where we’ve made cherished friends and met so many other amazing students because of our job. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that this guy, the one who had his sights on computer programming, would fall in love with photography and change his major to studio art. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that this guy, the one who hates dancing and married himself into a dancing-loving family, would be the one to start showing me dance moves we both try to attempt in the silliest ways. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that this guy, the one who cautioned me while we were dating, “I’m very sarcastic and not sensitive”, would be such a charming sweetheart who is very intuitive to my feelings. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I never imagined that we, the ones who had a low-budget wedding because we were only engaged for 3 months, now invest in anniversary sessions every year to capture how we’ve changed and grown over the years. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Forever grateful for my partner in all things. Happy 4 years to us, Bebeko. Thank you for being you. I love you, lover!

Danielle from Danielle G. Events is the planner behind this tropical wedding editorial. It was hosted at Mark’s Caribbean Kitchen in downtown Kitchener, a restaurant that serves food influenced from the West Indies. You won’t just get the vibe of the Caribbean through their food, but through their restaurant interior design as well! Danielle wanted to create a bridal editorial hosted at Mark’s Caribbean Kitchen to encourage brides that it is possible to have a small, intimate wedding hosted at a local restaurant, and still have all the decor and details of a tropical-inspired wedding.

The table setting was set up near the front entrance of the restaurant, which had a large window for beautiful, natural light. Jessica from Jessica Hobson Event Artistry did the stunning tropical floral arrangements for the table, the bouquet, the wicker chair, and the cake. The palm leaves and the large, colourful flowers are what made the tropical vibes come to life! The cake, made with white and orange buttercream to keep with the tropical theme, was created by Julie from Refined Sugar Cakes.

The invitations were hand painted and printed by Krista and her husband at Team Gee Designs. The lush botanical images were perfect for the tropical soiree. It’s so important your invitations hint at the theme of your wedding! It sets the vibe and expectation for the guests you’ve invited. You wouldn’t wear a full suit to a tropical themed wedding, #amiright?

Since we were in the heart of downtown Kitchener, it wasn’t hard to find beautiful backdrops for the rest of the bridal portraits! Most wedding venues have various locations on site for wedding portraits. When you have an intimate wedding at a restaurant, not so much! If you’re willing to go out and explore what’s around you, there are plenty of opportunities everywhere!

Meet Sam & Jordan!

Sam is the owner of Catalyst & Co.  She’s a hardworking and successful boss babe with an aesthetic to make you swoon! The creative style and talent she puts into her business is also shown in her lifestyle – simply darling and beautiful.

Jordan is a social media specialist and is so good at what he does. From his personality alone we know he’s charming, witty, and lots of fun – definite things to captivate an audience, wouldn’t you say?

Sam & Jordan have known each other for twelve years. TWELVE! They love to explore new towns, both near and far, so it was SO fitting when Jordan popped the question during one of their trips to Deep Cove (North Vancouver, BC).

We had such a great time with them during their engagement session. They both love being near the water so we all decided that Scarborough Bluffs would be a great spot for them! They were constantly making each other laugh, which was so adorable! I loved watching Jordan watch Sam – making sure she was okay, cheering her on, making her laugh…they make quite the team both in front of the camera and in life in general.

Sam says, “we have evolved into people we’re proud of, and we would like to look back and know this was just the beginning.” Twelve years is one amazing adventure they’ve been on, and now they’re preparing for their biggest and best one yet! We are soooo excited to be celebrating their new adventure next June!!

Scarborough Bluffs Spring Engagement Session | Toronto, ON

Scarborough Bluffs Engagement Session in the Spring Time

We’re all about buying experiences over things, so when I first saw ads on Instagram for HideSeek, a pop-up experience in downtown Toronto, I knew I had to get tickets right away! HideSeek is an interactive museum inspired by childhood nostalgia. I am a ’90s baby and someone who is very nostalgic (give me anything that gives me a little blast from the past and you’ll be pulling at my heart strings!), so I really wanted to dive into this experience!

I searched Pinterest for ’90s wardrobe inspiration (I’m also a huge lover of dressing up for the occasion lol). Most people on HideSeek’s Instagram and/or on Pinterest were wearing jeans…but I HATE jeans. Instead I wore black Gym Shark leggings–not ’90s inspired, but was comfy and neutral for the occasion. I purchased a couple of 90’s inspired tees from Forever21, wore a bright pink jacket, tied a denim shirt around my waist (adding the denim effect without actually having to wear it on my legs), popped in some hoop earrings, and broke out my old black converse!

My sister’s sister in law, Lacey-Rose, and her daughter, Hazel, joined us for our trip. They were SO ADORABLE wearing matching outfits — denim on denim, Mickey Mouse t-shirts, high-top hair buns, and hoop earrings.

Overall, HideSeek’s instalments were great to look at, but I felt like it weighed more heavily on the photo opportunity experience. If you’re looking for a place to actually play or learn, I would go somewhere else. I was fully underwhelmed by the lack thereof. If you’re looking for a place to take cute Instagram photos, this is definitely the place! It hasn’t put a damper on my itch to visit other interactive museums in the area! Currently on my bucket list:

Museum of Illusions
The Funhouse
Eye Candy⁣⠀

On the photography aspect:

I’m trying to get better about documenting our own memories and blogging about our personal experiences. I did it SO often growing up, which is how my love for photography started! Now that I professionally document memories for others, I try no to bring my camera to personal things so I can be present and not “work”. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
But I tried REALLLLY hard this time.⠀
⁣⠀
Alex took the majority of the photos (as you can probably tell)! It was quite the challenge trying to go through the interactive instalments swiftly, yet still try to get the settings right. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
I did the editing and wowoweeee that was a challenge. We are really good at finding the right light (natural light) and finding backgrounds that work well with that light. We also typically have our reflector to help manipulate light, as well as our strobes for when we have a lack of it. We obviously could’t lug all our equipment around for the sake of taking our own personal photos. Although I thought it was “awful lighting”, all it really was was just d i f f e r e n t . And things that are different or things that push us out of our comfort zone help us grow. It was a fun challenge to try and nail these photos!⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Did you grow up in the ’90s? Which were the most nostalgic instalments for you to look at? Tell me in the comment section below!
